Contributions to the Health of Idahoans
Dr. McGuire’s impact extends beyond the Annual Meeting. Recently, the National Institutes of Health awarded the University of Idaho over $11 million to establish a biomedical research center focused on women’s health and nutrition. As project director of the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grant, which spans five years, Dr. McGuire is poised to lead groundbreaking initiatives. Notably:
- Faculty researchers from various colleges will have the opportunity to apply for up to $100,000 annually for pilot projects related to women’s health, with significant interest already expressed from faculty across four colleges.
- The grant will support six staff members dedicated to this vital research.
- Notable studies include Dr. Chen’s investigation into the effects of vitamin D supplementation on maternal depression, Dr. Lane’s exploration of Type 2 diabetes among Hispanic women in Idaho, and Brown’s research on the impact of excess body fat in women with normal body weights.
Dr. McGuire’s leadership and dedication to improving health outcomes for Idahoans, particularly women, exemplify the spirit of the Idaho Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Gem Award.
