The Idaho Foodbank is piloting a program this summer.
Lessons are as follows:
- “Rethink Your Drink” (Healthy Beverage Intake/Hydration) – Goal for the kids: to increase water intake by making it more exciting by infusing it with fruits/vegetables/herbs, understand the importance of drinking water and staying hydrated, and ultimately choose water over sugary drinks
- Gardening/Nutrition Education – Goal for the kids: to learn a useful skill like gardening (including how to garden, bugs, parts of a plant, etc.), understand that gardening and nutrition are intertwined, have a better understanding where some food comes from
- “Harvest of the Month” – Goal for the kids: to understand the benefits/nutrition of eating fruits and vegetables, gain knowledge of local and seasonal Idaho produce
For each lesson we want to promote the importance of eating fruits and vegetables. Goal: the kids are more open to trying a variety of fruits and vegetables, all while increasing their consumption through informational and educational materials, games, taste demos, etc.
Our overall goal is to create a sustainable nutrition based program to engage kids and families during the summer while providing a fun learning environment. In order to achieve this goal, we hope to make the lessons successful through involving partners, maintain or increase attendance and engagement, and providing the appropriate resource
