The Academy’s Public Policy Team is asking for your immediate assistance!
There are two items in bold below:
1. Contact your Representative using the Grassroots Action link. http://www.eatrightpro.org/action-center
We need to get more Academy members to send emails on MNT and Prediabetes. The Diabetes Advocacy Alliance is requesting the Congressional Diabetes Caucus to schedule a much-overdue diabetes hearing on Capitol Hill. Because there are several legislative bills on diabetes to consider moving forward, it is vital to show our members support the Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act (HR 1686). Sending an email from the Action Alert will have us on record for the need to cover MNT. With several bills on diabetes we know there will be a cut off on moving them forward.
We need you to continue to push your members to email their Representative using the Academy’s Action Alert system to express support for the Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act (H.R. 1686). Please send the following message to members immediately:
Please send your Representative an email letter today urging them to support Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act (H.R. 1686). This bill would extend Medicare coverage of medical nutrition therapy provided by a registered dietitian nutritionist to people with prediabetes.
It takes only a few minutes! It is urgent that your Representative hears from you this week.

2. We are also asking that each policy leader send an email to health staffers for members of Congress that are part of the diabetes caucus to show your support. A short email saying …
If you have spoken with a staff member – send them a personal note.
Dear (Insert name of health staffer),
Please support “Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act H.R. 1686”the bipartisan Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act by having your boss become a sponsor.
Currently, 1 in 3 Medicare dollars is spent on people with diabetes. Given the escalating numbers in diabetes, this disease continues to be one of the largest health care threats to our nation’s economy. The cost of diabetes has continued to increase significantly, with the true total cost of diabetes rising to $322 billion per year in 2012, up 48 percent in just five years.
According to a recent study that is attached, medical nutrition therapy provided by a registered dietitian nutritionist can result in weight loss and improved blood glucose, key outcomes of success for diabetes prevention programs. And for cost savings.
Let me know if your member of Congress would like to see these important nutrition services provided in their area. I would be glad to arrange this.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer.
We have attached those staff’s email address for your use. We also have updated the Leave Behind with recent research on the effectiveness of MNT from Academy members, so please share this with your Member of Congress as well!
Many thanks and have a great weekend!
