Internship – 4-H Healthy Living and Eat Smart Idaho

Position Summary: Idaho 4-H and Eat Smart Idaho are partnering to deliver quality healthy living youth programs across Idaho. The mission of the Idaho 4-H program is to help youth acquire knowledge, life skills, and attitudes that enhance their lives. The Eat Smart Idaho program is committed to educating and inspiring children, youth, and families with limited incomes to eat healthy and be active.
Work with University of Idaho Extension faculty and staff to implement 4-H Food Smart Families program. Plan and teach lessons to youth in summer programs that cover nutrition, food preparation, cooking, and shopping skills. Coordinate community service projects. Track and evaluate youth participants. Provide a safe, caring, and enriching environment.
Note: The 4-H Youth Program Internship position is for 360 hours at a stipend rate of $12/hour of service. Position will work out University office locations in Caldwell, Pocatello or Coeur d’Alene. Extension faculty and staff will determine hours and schedule. Internships begin May 16 and run through August. Internship hours are Monday through Friday and may include some evenings.
Open to students currently enrolled in an Idaho institution. Interns must have reliable transportation. Mileage reimbursement based on UI rates.
LOCATIONS: Interns will be place at one of the following locations. • 5 Interns – Caldwell (Boise/Nampa/Caldwell/Homedale/Payette service area) • 1 Intern – Pocatello (Idaho Falls/Pocatello service area) • 2 Interns – Coeur d’Alene (Post Falls/CdA service area)
Job Duty Function: Promote and teach healthy living/ nutrition activities to youth and families. Job Duties/Responsibilities: Report directly to Extension faculty or staff as assigned. Work with team to design, plan, and run youth activities/programs. Help set up, teach, and coordinate youth activities. Assist in tracking and maintaining inventory and supplies; help gather and ensure supplies needed for activities. Promote program at community events and through print and social media.
Job Duty Function: Support mentoring and providing guidance to high school volunteers. Job Duties/Responsibilities: Work with teens to prepare for teaching and community events. Guide teen advocates while teaching. Provide teens with positive feedback to build their skill set.
Job Duty Function: Assist in conducting evaluation. Job Duties/Responsibilities: Assist in conducting evaluation surveys as directed by faculty/staff. Do data entry as directed.
Job Duty Function: Contribute to team effort. Job Duties/Responsibilities: Participate in meetings and trainings as related to program. Contribute to team as directed; accomplish related tasks as needed.
Must be able to pass UI criminal background check. Must be 18 years or older. Must be enrolled in an Idaho college/university or have recently received a bachelor/master’s degree at time of application. Must have reliable transportation. Must attend three-day training in Caldwell, May 17-19, 2015.
• Experience in nutrition, health education, physical education or related areas. • Experience in teaching/training youth through the 4-H Youth Development program or other youth programs. • Basic knowledge/experience in the areas of health, fitness, and/or nutrition. • Familiarity with and/or interest in community. • Experience doing public relations, marketing or writing for social and print media. • Ability to use word processing and basic Excel program. • Proficient at multi-tasking, meeting deadlines and following directions. • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work cooperatively with others. • Experience working with individuals from varying cultural and/or socio-economic backgrounds. • Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish fluently for Caldwell locations.
