Despite the emphasis on obesity as a major health issue, little progress has been made toward its treatment or prevention. Focus on weight is stigmatizing and has been shown to worsen health outcomes. However, there is excellent research to support a weight-neutral, nutrition and physical-activity-based, Health at Every Size approach as a very promising chronic disease prevention strategy. Dietitians can implement HAES principles in any practice setting by examining their own bias and assumptions about weight.
- Interpret Health At Every Size principles for application to patients and practice settings.
- Identify patterns between prescribed dieting, weight gain and weight stigma.
- Assess personal weight biases and assumptions, including differentiating between helpful and stigmatizing language.
