Dear Idaho Academy Members: (PS – Watch your e-mail for an Action Alert)
I am writing to strongly encourage you to contact your representative AND senator and urge him/her to support Registered Dietitians in the State of Idaho. We have included step-by-step instructions as well as an email template to help facilitate this connection to your legislator(s). Let me explain why we are asking you to contact your legislator to increase awareness of our concurrent resolution.
On January 31st, we presented to the Health and Welfare Committees in both chambers. Our main message was: we are the group that can help save healthcare dollars by including nutrition services as an essential health benefit in an insurance exchange. Several enthusiastic legislators approached us about writing (and passing – that’s where you come in…) legislation that would increase awareness of our message(s) and to provide a venue in which our voice can be heard. We have written a concurrent resolution (Concurrent Resolution.Dietitians.2.22.13), with the help of several legislators and writers, of which is included in this email. We have also met and solidified support with key legislators in both the House (Reps. Rommell, Wood, Hancey and Chew) and the Senate (Senators Lodge, Martin, Schmidt), of which Rep Romrell and Senator Lodge has agreed to carry and introduce the legislation into the privileged committee being Health and Welfare of each chamber.
This is where you come in… We need all legislators from each of the 35 districts to hear from you, explaining your great work as a Registered Dietitian, and asking for their support when this resolution comes to a vote. Your voice needs to be heard, no matter if you are employed part-time or full-time or raising your family – we are asking you, as Idaho Registered Dietitians, to contact your representative and senator and ask for their support.
The good news is this is a concurrent resolution – we are NOT asking to change the constitution or support a bill or for any funding. Our efforts are threefold: 1) increase awareness that Registered, Licensed Dietitians are the nutrition experts in Idaho; 2) encourage that MNT and professional nutrition counseling be considered as essential health benefits in Idaho’s health plan in a health insurance exchange; and, 3) encourage the Insurance Exchange Board to include the Idaho Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in determining such essential health benefits.
Thank you SO much for your efforts in showcasing and leveraging your great work not only as a citizen of Idaho, but also as a Registered Dietitian.
TOGETHER WE ARE BETTER
